Eating away from home: lunch box ideas

When your toddler heads off to pre-school or day care you’ll want to give them plenty of nutritious food to fuel their day. As you pack their lunch, think about a variety of foods that are easy for them to handle.

Starting out:

  • Fruit - mandarins (peeled), grapes, a banana cut in half, or a kiwifruit peeled and cut into pieces.
  • Raisins in a little container or an individual raisin box
  • Small cheese slices or sticks
  • Slices of fruit loaf
  • Cherry tomatoes cut in half

As they get older and better at chewing and handling a variety of foods you can try things like:

  • Carrot sticks
  • Small sandwiches - cheese, ham, avocado, lettuce, Marmite, egg, tuna and grated carrot are all good fillings
  • Apple slices (a little lemon juice stops them from browning)
  • Mini muffins
  • Plain biscuits and rice crackers
